Iran's mission to the United Nations stated on Thursday that the death of Yahya Sinwar would only strengthen the "resistance" in the region. This statement came just hours after Israel announced it had killed the Hamas leader.
"The spirit of resistance will be strengthened. He will become a model for the youth and children who will carry forward his path toward the liberation of Palestine," the mission said in a post on X. "As long as occupation and aggression exist, resistance will endure, for the martyr remains alive and a source of inspiration."
Sinwar was thought to have been hiding in the maze of tunnels that Hamas has constructed beneath Gaza over the past 20 years. He was recognized as Hamas's overall head after political chief Ismail Haniyeh was assassinated in Tehran in July.
Yahya Sinwar was serving as the commander of Hamas. He was eliminated in a battle Thursday after being traced "going from home to home" in southern Gaza in a desperate attempt to evade discovery, according to the Israeli military. Israel has celebrated the death of 61-year-old Sinwar as one of its most significant strikes against Hamas since the group launched attacks on October 7, 2023, marking the beginning of the Gaza war.
Military drone footage showed Sinwar alone in a blown-up residence, with his head wrapped in a traditional scarf and one hand severely damaged. In his last moments, he threw a stick at the approaching drone. "We identified him as a terrorist inside a building and we shot into the building and we entered to scan the area. We found him with a gun and 40 thousand shekels. He was on the run and our forces eliminated him," said Hagari.
In August, Sinwar took over for Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, who was assassinated on July 31 in Iran.
