Iran has stated that it will address the case of Indian national Nimisha Priya, who is on death row in Yemen. Iranian government sources told India Today TV that they will do whatever they can to help in the matter.
Nimisha Priya, a nurse from Kerala, has been sentenced to death in Yemen for killing a Yemeni citizen. On December 30 last year, Yemeni President Rashad al-Alimi approved her death sentence. Nimisha Priya has been in prison since 2017. Born in the Palakkad district of Kerala, Nimisha Priya was detained in July 2017 on suspicion of killing Yemeni national Talal Abdo Mehdi. In 2020, a Sanaa trial court sentenced her to death, and in November 2023, Yemen's Supreme Judicial Council rejected her appeal.
The option of paying blood money was available. Her release depended on the forgiveness of the victim's family, Talal Abdo Mehdi, and their tribal leader. If the victim's family pardoned her and accepted the blood money, her death sentence could have been revoked. Negotiations were in progress but came to a halt when the payment to Priya's lawyer was delayed. The lawyer had requested a pre-negotiation fee of USD 40,000, to be paid in two installments. He refused to continue until the full amount was paid. According to India, it was "extending all possible help" to Nimisha Priya's family. In the event that the family does not secure a pardon, she will be executed in a month.
"We are aware of the sentencing of Nimisha Priya in Yemen. We understand that the family of Nimisha Priya is exploring relevant options. The government is extending all possible help in the matter," Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said. In April 2024, Prema Kumari, the mother of Nimisha Priya, travelled to Yemen and saw her daughter at prison for the first time in eleven years. Her mother has been in the Gulf country ever since, attempting to have her daughter released.
