Iran has suspended flights to Iraq, Oman and Azerbaijan amid fresh US pressure on its aviation sector, disrupting air links with three neighbouring countries. Al Jazeera reported the development, citing Iranian media.

Flights from Iran to Iraq and Oman were suspended from Wednesday morning, according to Iran’s Civil Aviation Authority. The move followed a warning from US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent that Washington would increase pressure on Iran’s aviation industry.

Bessent also warned countries against supporting Iranian airlines. He said countries that provide fuel to Iranian carriers, offer landing services or help sell their tickets could face exclusion from the US dollar system, according to Al Jazeera.

Iran’s Civil Aviation Authority spokesperson Majid Akhavan said Tehran was looking for alternative ways to maintain air services to Iraq. He said Iran was exploring the possibility of using another airport for the route, state-run ISNA reported.

The suspension also affected flights between Iran and Azerbaijan. Iranian airlines stopped operating flights to the neighbouring country with immediate effect, Iranian newspaper Shargh reported, citing Azerbaijan Airlines.

The latest move has added pressure on Iran’s aviation and transport sectors. The disruption has also affected the country’s regional air connectivity as Washington increases its sanctions pressure.

Separately, Brigadier General Mohammad Karami, commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Ground Forces, said Iran would continue to confront its adversaries.

Karami made the remarks while inspecting operational bases in northwestern Iran, according to Iran’s Mehr News Agency. His comments came as tensions remain high between Tehran and its adversaries.

“By the grace of God, we will not yield an inch to the enemy, just as we did during the Sacred Defence period [1980-1988 Iran-Iraq War],” Karami was quoted as saying.

Karami also said the future belonged to Islam and the Iranian people. He stressed that Iran would continue on its “path of resistance and steadfastness.”

The aviation restrictions come amid broader tensions surrounding Iran and the United States. Washington has continued to target sectors linked to Iran’s economy and international transport network. The latest pressure has now affected flights connecting Iran with Iraq, Oman and Azerbaijan.

The suspension of flights to Iraq and Oman took effect on Wednesday morning, while flights to Azerbaijan were halted separately with immediate effect. Iranian authorities are examining alternative arrangements for maintaining services to Iraq, according to Iranian state media.
