Iranian state media reported on Thursday that Iran has officially responded to a letter from U.S. President Donald Trump, which was sent to Iran's supreme leader in an effort to restart discussions about Tehran's nuclear program.
Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi told the state-run IRNA news agency on Wednesday that the Iranian response was "appropriately sent through Oman." No details have been shared about Iran's response or the contents of Trump's letter to 85-year-old Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. This letter was sent while the Trump administration imposed new sanctions on Iran as part of its "maximum pressure" campaign.
Araghchi stated that Iran's policy "remains firm on not engaging in direct negotiations under maximum pressure and military threats," without going into specifics about the letters. Indirect discussions, which have occurred throughout past administrations, might go on, he added. On March 12, 2025, senior Emirati diplomat Anwar Gargash visited Tehran and handed over a letter from Trump to Iranian officials.
Trump has called for talks on Iran's fast-growing nuclear program. Along with imposing sanctions, he has also hinted that military action against Iran is an option. However, he still believes that a new agreement can be made.
