Media reports say that Iran has carried out the execution of a "high-ranking spy" working for Israel's Mossad intelligence agency. The executed person, named Mohsen Langarneshin, was found guilty of assisting Mossad with operational and technical support inside Iran. This included involvement in the 2022 killing of Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps member Hassan Sayyad Khodaei in Tehran, as reported by the Iranian judiciary’s Mizan news agency on Wednesday. According to the judiciary, through its official news agency Mizan, Langarneshin was executed on Wednesday morning for giving Mossad significant "logistical, technical and operational support" over two years beginning in 2020.
According to Xinhua news agency, authorities said the execution was done after all legal and judicial procedures were completed. Langarneshin was primarily accused of playing a role in the assassination of the IRGC or Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Colonel Hassan Sayyad Khodaei, who two individuals fatally shot on a motorcycle in Tehran in May 2022. The convict was accused of several criminal activities, including aiding an attack on an industrial facility linked to Iran's Defence Ministry in Isfahan, providing communication equipment for Mossad agents, purchasing and outfitting vehicles for operations, transferring funds from Israeli officers to agents in Iran, and securing safe houses in various Iranian provinces.
Mizan informed that Langarneshin purchased a motorcycle to follow Khodaei's movements, shared the details with Mossad, and was present when the killing took place. He was also accused of aiding an attack on an industrial site in Isfahan linked to Iran's Ministry of Defence and Armed Forces Logistics. The report mentioned that Langarneshin admitted to all the charges against him.
Iran presented "extensive intelligence and technical evidence" connecting Langarneshin to these activities and stated that he "fully confessed" to his involvement.
Iran, embroiled in a long-standing covert conflict with Israel, has executed several individuals accused of having ties to Mossad, especially those allegedly involved in sabotage and assassination attempts aimed at disrupting its nuclear program. In December 2023, four people, three men and a woman, were executed for their suspected connections to Mossad.
Langarneshin's execution takes place amid renewed nuclear talks between the US and Iran, with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi accusing Israel of trying to sabotage these negotiations.
The fourth round of talks, mediated by Oman, between Washington and Tehran is set to take place on Saturday in Rome, as per Tehran.
