The deputy chairman rejected the opposition's no-confidence resolution against Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar, claiming it was intended to "mar" the vice president's reputation.
Deputy Chairman Harivansh described the proposal as "flawed" in a lengthy order, adding that it was drafted with "haste" to harm the Chairman's reputation. Harivansh explained the reasons for rejecting the motion, highlighting that it did not meet the mandatory requirement of a 14-day notice and that the Vice President's name, Dhankhar, was misspelt in the notice. However, the rule of having 60 MPs' signatures was followed when the motion was submitted last week.
In his statement, presented in the House by Rajya Sabha Secretary General PC Mody, the Deputy Chairman stated that the impeachment notice appeared to be a deliberate attempt to discredit the nation's constitutional institutions and damage the Vice President's reputation. The Samajwadi Party, the Trinamool Congress and the AAP supported the motion, which was filed under Article 67(B) of the Constitution. This caused a commotion in the Upper House of Parliament. A motion to remove the Chairman was introduced for the first time in the history of the Rajya Sabha. During the winter session of Parliament, the INDIA bloc's concerns over Chairman Dhankhar's alleged "partisan" behaviour intensified.
Since it began on November 25, this session has seen frequent disagreements between the Opposition and the ruling party. Union Minister Kiren Rijiju defended the Rajya Sabha Chairman, referring to him as a "farmer’s son" who preserved the House's honour. Targeting the opposition MPs, Rijiju added, "You have no right to be members if you can't respect the Chair. We have taken an oath to protect the sovereignty of the country."
