Amara Raja Infra, part of the $2 billion Amara Raja Group, has achieved a significant milestone by establishing India’s first green hydrogen fuelling station in Leh, Ladakh. Developed for NTPC Ltd., this project is set to pave the way for emission-free transportation in the high-altitude region and marks a key step in India’s journey towards green mobility.
Union Minister of Power, Housing, and Urban Affairs, Manohar Lal, officially inaugurated the station, which will initially support the operation of five hydrogen fuel cell buses in and around Leh. This places India among the select few countries spearheading advancements in green hydrogen technology for sustainable transportation.
The project involved comprehensive tasks, including designing, engineering, construction, testing, and commissioning of the hydrogen station. Additionally, Amara Raja Infra is responsible for three years of operational and maintenance activities on a turnkey basis.
Speaking about the accomplishment, Dwarakanadha Reddy, Business Head (Power EPC) at Amara Raja Infra, stated, “The completion of this challenging project has reaffirmed our EPC expertise, and we are very excited to be the first player to enter the green hydrogen infrastructure space.”
The fuelling station boasts a capacity of producing 80kg of green hydrogen daily and was built under extreme conditions at an altitude of 3,400 meters. Despite temperatures fluctuating between -25°C and 30°C, the project was completed in two years, showcasing robust engineering and innovation.
As part of the National Hydrogen Energy Mission, the project is a precursor to large-scale green hydrogen mobility and storage systems across India. It is expected to provide critical insights for establishing similar stations nationwide, reinforcing India’s commitment to sustainable energy solutions and a greener future.
