India Railways is set to establish its second railway manufacturing unit in Kazipet, Telangana. The foundation stone for the unit will be laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on July 8. The South Central Railway (SCR) general manager, Arun Kumar Jain, revealed that the unit will commence operations by manufacturing 1,200 wagons in its first year and will subsequently scale up production to 2,400 wagons from the second year onwards.
While the first railway manufacturing unit in India is Braithwaite & Co, located in Kolkata, the upcoming unit in Kazipet will be the first to be established by the Indian Railways. Initially sanctioned as a wagon repair workshop capable of overhauling 200 wagons per month, it was later decided to convert it into a full-fledged wagon manufacturing unit to meet the growing demand and promote local industry.
Jain further emphasized that the establishment of this unit will not only meet the demand for wagons but also contribute to the development of the industrial ecosystem in the Hanumakonda region. Spanning over 160 acres, the unit will have the potential for future expansion in both wagon and rolling stock manufacturing capacities.
The construction of the unit will be undertaken by Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL), and it is expected to be completed by February 22, 2025. This new manufacturing unit is a significant step towards enhancing the railway infrastructure in the country and supporting the growth of the local industry.
