Chandra Arya, the Indian-origin Member of Parliament representing Nepean, has formally joined the race to become the Prime Minister of Canada. Arya filed his nomination and made a notable address in the Kannada language, reflecting pride in his heritage.
Hailing from the Tumkur district in Karnataka, Arya completed an MBA in Dharwad before moving to Canada. He recently declared his candidacy for the country’s top political position, aiming to bring transformative leadership to the forefront.
Arya has been a prominent critic of Khalistan supporters, particularly condemning their celebrations of former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s assassination and the vandalism of Hindu temples in Canada. His campaign centres on a vision to strengthen Canada by introducing bold political reforms, promising to work toward making the country “a sovereign republic.”
“I am running to be the next Prime Minister of Canada to lead a smaller, more efficient government, rebuild our nation, and secure prosperity for future generations,” Arya posted on X.
Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar has defined him as a steadfast supporter of India.
“We are facing significant structural problems that haven’t been seen for generations, and solving them will require tough choices. I have always worked hard for what is best for Canadians, and for the sake of our children and grandchildren, we must make bold decisions that are absolutely necessary. If elected as the next leader of the Liberal Party, I offer my knowledge and expertise to do so,” Arya stated.
Recognising that the country is navigating through a "perfect storm," Arya, who had met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi in August last year, stated, “Many Canadians, especially younger generations, face significant affordability issues. The working middle class is struggling today, and many working families are retiring directly into poverty.”
Arya also highlighted India’s role as a vital and expanding market for Canadian exports and investments and a crucial provider of the talent needed to meet Canada's growing demands.
“Canada deserves leadership that isn’t afraid to make big decisions—decisions that rebuild our economy, restore hope, create equal opportunities for all Canadians, and secure prosperity for our children and grandchildren. Bold political decisions are not optional; they are necessary. With prudence and pragmatism as my guiding principles, I am stepping forward to take on this responsibility and lead Canada as its next Prime Minister,” Arya expressed.
The announcement comes during Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s recent declaration that he will step down from his role. Trudeau has assured that he will remain in office until a new leader is elected.
