Marking a notable turn of events, an individual of Indian origin and born in Singapore has emerged as an official candidate for the forthcoming presidential elections in the prosperous Southeast Asian nation.
In a notable development, Tharman Shanmugaratnam, aged 66 and a former senior minister within the ruling People's Action Party (PAP) government, has been officially recognized as a candidate for Singapore's presidential elections. In a speech, he expressed his hopes for a dignified and unifying campaign that rallies Singaporeans together rather than divides them.
Singapore's Elections Department (ELD) recently declared three individuals, including two candidates of Chinese origin, as official contenders for the esteemed non-political post of the presidency. The other two candidates are Ng Kok Song, 75, the former investment chief of a state-owned enterprise, and Tan Kin Lian, 75, who formerly headed the state-run insurance company.
Tharman's decision to run for the presidency prompted his resignation from all political and public offices in July, a prerequisite for eligibility in the electoral race. He shared with local media that his candidacy is driven by a longstanding commitment to advancing a fairer, more compassionate, and inclusive society.
Stating, "I believe in a fairer, more compassionate and more inclusive society. And my life is dedicated to that. Singapore can be special," Tharman underscored his motivation for entering the contest. He further emphasized that the country faces an intricate and challenging future, which led him to offer his decades of experience and capabilities to contribute nationally and internationally.
Tharman's professional journey began as an economist and civil servant, primarily at the Monetary Authority of Singapore. He transitioned to politics in 2001, holding various roles such as minister for education and finance, as well as deputy prime minister from 2011 to 2019.
Among the other contenders, Ng conveyed his presidential aspirations by highlighting the importance of safeguarding Singapore's key assets – its reserves, public service appointments, and social stability – while Tan underscored his commitment to impartiality from the ruling government. Tan pledged to diligently uphold his constitutional responsibilities and serve with honesty and dedication if elected.
