The Indian Navy successfully stopped a piracy attempt on a merchant ship in the Gulf of Aden after its frontline warship INS Trikand responded quickly to a distress call on Wednesday afternoon, July 1. The timely operation forced the suspected pirates to flee before they could take control of the vessel. The Navy later confirmed that all crew members were safe.
The piracy attempt targeted the merchant vessel MV Golden Arsenal, which had one Indian crew member on board. As the suspected pirates tried to board the ship, the crew immediately followed standard safety procedures. They locked themselves inside a secure safe room and alerted the authorities through an established communication channel. Their quick response helped the Indian Navy launch an immediate rescue operation.
INS Trikand, which was already deployed in the region on a mission, rushed towards the merchant vessel after receiving the distress call. As the warship reached the area, the suspected pirates abandoned their attempt and escaped before they could carry out any further action. The presence of the Indian Navy prevented the situation from turning into a major security threat.
After the pirates fled, the Indian Navy deployed its Marine Commandos (MARCOS) to board MV Golden Arsenal. The commandos carefully searched and secured the entire vessel to ensure that no threat remained on board. After completing the sanitisation process, they confirmed that the ship was safe and the crew members were out of danger.
The latest operation adds to a series of successful anti-piracy missions carried out by the Indian Navy in the Western Indian Ocean. Earlier, on the afternoon of June 19, INS Trikand had responded to another distress call from the merchant vessel MV Fareeda 5. The vessel had reported a likely piracy attempt while sailing in the Western Indian Ocean. The Navy acted immediately and launched an operation to investigate the threat.
INS Trikand reached the location without delay and took prompt action to deter the suspected pirates. The Navy's swift response ensured the safety of MV Fareeda 5 and prevented any possible attack on the merchant vessel. The successful operation once again highlighted the Navy's continuous efforts to protect commercial shipping routes in the region.
Sharing details of that mission, the Indian Navy posted on X, “Responding swiftly to a distress call from MV Fareeda 5 on a likely piracy attempt in the Western Indian Ocean on 17 June 26, mission-deployed INS Trikand, a frontline frigate of the Indian Navy, undertook prompt action to investigate and deter the threat. Timely intervention assured the safety of the merchant vessel. As a preferred security partner and first responder in the region, Indian Navy remains committed to safeguarding merchant shipping, countering piracy and ensuring safe and secure seas.”
The Indian Navy has maintained a strong presence in the region to protect merchant ships from piracy threats. Its warships regularly patrol key sea routes and respond to distress calls from commercial vessels operating in high-risk areas. These operations help maintain the safety of international shipping lanes and strengthen maritime security across the Indian Ocean.
The Navy had carried out another successful anti-piracy mission earlier this year. On May 27, Indian Naval Ship INS Kolkata prevented a suspected piracy attempt near the merchant vessel MV Mashallah 1 in the Western Indian Ocean. The operation began after the Navy received information about possible pirate activity in the area.
INS Kolkata responded immediately and investigated the situation using its onboard helicopter and boarding teams. The warship closely monitored the vessel and took swift action to deter the suspected pirates before they could launch an attack. The operation ensured the safety of MV Mashallah 1 and prevented a possible piracy incident.
These back-to-back operations reflect the Indian Navy's readiness to respond to maritime threats across the region. The successful actions by INS Trikand and INS Kolkata demonstrate the Navy's ability to react quickly to emergency situations and protect merchant vessels from piracy. Through constant deployment, rapid response, and professional coordination, the Indian Navy continues to play a vital role in ensuring safe and secure seas for commercial shipping.
