The Indian Navy marked a significant milestone with the launch of LSAM 13, Yard 81, the fifth barge under the Missile Cum Ammunition Barge project. This barge, constructed by MSME Shipyard SECON Engineering Projects Pvt Ltd (SEPPL) in Visakhapatnam, was undertaken on June 10th.
According to an official statement from the Ministry of Defence, the launching ceremony was overseen by Commodore Manish Vig, General Manager (QA) of Naval Dockyard (Mumbai).
The LSAM 13 represents a crucial addition to the Indian Navy's fleet, enhancing its capabilities in missile and ammunition logistics. The project underscores India's commitment to bolstering its naval infrastructure and operational readiness.
On 19th February 2021, the Ministry of Defence signed a contract with M/s SECON Engineering Projects Pvt Ltd, based in Visakhapatnam, for the construction of the Missile Cum Ammunition Barge.
The availability of these barges is expected to significantly enhance the operational capabilities of the Indian Navy. They will facilitate the transportation, embarkation, and disembarkation of articles and ammunition for IN ships, both at jetties and outer harbours, thereby supporting naval logistics and mission readiness.
These barges, constructed under the supervision of the Indian Register of Shipping (IRS) in adherence to Naval Rules and Regulations, are products of indigenous design and manufacturing.
During the design phase, model testing of the barges was conducted at the Naval Science and Technological Laboratory (NSTL) in Visakhapatnam, ensuring compliance with rigorous standards.
These vessels represent a significant contribution to the Make in India initiative by the Government of India, showcasing local expertise and capability in naval construction.
Earlier this week, an Indian Navy ship, deployed for maritime surveillance, responded promptly to a distress call from the fishing vessel INFAN DHAS. The vessel had experienced engine failure, prompting the navy's swift technical intervention.
According to an Indian Navy spokesperson, the ship's technical team efficiently rectified the defect and restored the engine's operation, enabling the fishing vessel to resume its operations without delay.
