The Indian Embassy in Scotland on Sunday raised concerns over the display of an incorrect map of India at a restaurant in Glasgow after boxer Lovlina Borgohain pointed out that the Northeast was missing from the map. The issue came to light during a visit by the Indian boxing contingent to the restaurant following their successful campaign at the Commonwealth Games 2026.

The embassy said it had taken note of the matter with concern and immediately contacted the restaurant. It stated, "We have noted with concern the depiction of an incorrect map of India at the premises of a restaurant where members of the Indian sports contingent were hosted last evening."

The mission further said it spoke to the restaurant management, which assured officials that the issue would be corrected without delay. According to the embassy, the restaurant also confirmed that it was immediately withdrawing the items carrying the incorrect map and would take appropriate corrective action.

The controversy began after Assam-based boxer Lovlina Borgohain noticed that the restaurant's branding showed an incomplete map of India with the Northeast cut off. The Indian boxing team had visited the restaurant, Mister Singh's India, for a celebratory dinner after creating history by winning 10 medals at the Commonwealth Games 2026.

Lovlina politely raised the issue with the restaurant management during the visit. She expressed that the incorrect depiction deeply affected her as someone from the Northeast. She said, "Please don't take this the wrong way. I felt a little hurt by this. In the map of India, our Northeast is missing. Yes, even outside, the map that's displayed has cut off the Northeast. As someone from the Northeast, that really hurts us. That's all I wanted to say. Please keep this in mind next time. Thank you so much."

A video of Lovlina highlighting the issue soon went viral on social media. The incident attracted widespread attention and prompted the restaurant to respond publicly.

Ajay Singh, president of the Boxing Federation of India, was also present at the restaurant during the interaction. He clarified that there was no confrontation between the Indian delegation and the restaurant staff. Speaking to PTI, Singh said, "It was an aberration, and we pointed that out, me and Lovlina. They accepted their mistake and assured us that it will be corrected."

Following the backlash, Mister Singh's India issued a public statement apologising for the incorrect map. The restaurant said it "unequivocally" apologised for the mistake and promised to update its logo with the correct map of India. It also stated that there was never any intention to offend anyone and that it had proudly hosted the Indian athletes after their impressive performance at the Commonwealth Games.

The restaurant said, “We will change the logo with a proper map. It was our humble privilege and honour, that we served team India, after their fantastic, achievements in the Commonwealth Games. All athletes and guests thoroughly enjoyed their evening, these memories will last with us for India. Team Mr Singh India."

Shortly after releasing the statement, the restaurant's Instagram page appeared to have been deleted. Visitors trying to access the account were shown a message from Meta stating, "Sorry, this page isn't available."

The incident also drew reactions from political leaders in Assam, who praised Lovlina for raising the issue respectfully while representing the country abroad.

Assam's Industries, Commerce and Public Enterprise Minister Bimal Borah congratulated Lovlina for standing up for the country's integrity. In a post on X, he wrote, "Our pride @LovlinaBorgohai didn't just win silver for India at the Commonwealth Games, she stood up for India's pride off the ring too."

He added that Lovlina's objection to the incorrect map reflected courage, patriotism and respect for the country's unity. He further wrote, "Proud of our daughter of Assam for always standing tall for Bharat."

Assam Health Minister Ashok Singhal also praised the boxer in a post on X. Calling her actions an example of true patriotism, he wrote, "For a true Indian, Nation’s integrity is simply non-negotiable."

Referring to the calm and respectful manner in which Lovlina raised the issue, Singhal added, "Some punches hit with conviction, not gloves."

The issue was resolved quickly after it was brought to the attention of the restaurant. The Indian Embassy confirmed that corrective measures had been initiated, while the restaurant assured that the incorrect map would be removed and replaced with an accurate depiction of India. The incident highlighted the importance of accurately representing the country's territorial integrity and also drew appreciation for Lovlina Borgohain's composed and respectful approach in raising her concern.
