As part of the Indian Army's "Decade of Transformation" initiative, the overhauled T-90 Bhishma tank was officially rolled out at the 505 Army Base Workshop in Delhi Cantonment on October 7. General Upendra Dwivedi, Chief of the Army Staff, attended the ceremony, reflecting the Army's commitment to maintaining high operational standards for its armoured forces.
The T-90 Bhishma, which has been a key asset for India’s mechanised forces since its introduction in 2003, is known for its superior firepower, agility, and defensive strength. The overhaul process, crucial to ensuring the tank remains in peak condition, involves completely dismantling the vehicle. This meticulous process allows for the careful examination and rebuilding of over 200 parts and sub-systems, ensuring each component is in top working order.
The overhaul was carried out by the Corps of Electronics and Mechanical Engineers (EME) at the 505 Army Base Workshop. This unit specialises in maintaining and refurbishing military vehicles, and for this project, they used advanced equipment, including custom machinery and Test Benches provided by the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM). The engineers performed detailed testing of the tank's mechanical, electronic, and instrumental systems, ensuring that all components met the highest standards of performance and durability. The parts were assessed using Automated Test Equipment (ATEs), which allowed the team to verify that everything was working perfectly before reassembling the tank.
General Dwivedi commended the EME technicians and officers for their dedication and technical expertise. He highlighted the importance of their work in maintaining India’s combat readiness and encouraged them to continue striving for excellence in future projects. He also emphasised that the ability to independently overhaul such critical military equipment reflects India’s growing self-reliance in defence technology.
The successful overhaul of the T-90 Bhishma tank is a clear example of India’s efforts to build indigenous capabilities in military maintenance and manufacturing. This aligns closely with the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, which aims to make India more self-sufficient and advanced in defence production.
By continuing to invest in the modernisation and upkeep of key warfighting platforms like the T-90 Bhishma, the Indian Army is ensuring that it remains prepared for future challenges and can operate effectively in various combat scenarios.
