The Indian Army is set to enhance its air defense capabilities with the upcoming delivery of the Russian Igla-S VSHORAD systems. A notable feature of this acquisition is the partial assembly of the systems in India through a technology transfer agreement between Adani Defence Systems and Technologies Limited (ADSTL) and Russia's Rosoboronexport.
The Igla-S, a portable missile system, is tailored to counter low-altitude aerial threats such as aircraft, helicopters, and drones within close proximity. Its integration into the Army's arsenal fills a significant void in its air defense grid. The procurement comprises 48 launchers, 100 missiles, as well as supplementary gear like night vision equipment and a testing facility.
This initiative not only bolsters India's defense readiness but also marks a substantial stride towards enhanced self-sufficiency in defense manufacturing. Although the missiles are sourced from Russia, the local assembly of specific components within India signifies progress towards indigenous production capabilities.
The anticipated delivery of the Igla-S systems at the end of May follows the resolution of a protracted payments dispute between India and Russia, which had impeded numerous defense agreements. This breakthrough, facilitated through the utilisation of national currencies, is anticipated to streamline future collaborations between the two nations.
Alongside the acquisition of the Igla-S, the Indian Army is preparing to welcome the initial delivery of one of two Israeli Hermes-900 Medium Altitude Long Endurance Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) in the upcoming month. These advancements, coupled with continuous endeavours to develop domestic defense systems, emphasise India's dedication to enhancing the capabilities of its armed forces and safeguarding its security amidst dynamic geopolitical shifts.
