Indian Army signs MoU for 'next generation wireless technologies'

In a significant development, the Military College of Telecommunication Engineering (MCTE) of the Indian Army and the Society for Applied Microwave Electronics Engineering & Research (SAMEER), an autonomous R&D laboratory under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to enhance collaboration in 'Next Generation Wireless Technologies' for the Indian Army, as announced by the Ministry of Defence on Saturday.
According to the statement, the MoU was signed by Lt Gen K H Gawas, Commandant MCTE and Colonel Commandant Corps of Signals, and Dr P H Rao, Director General SAMEER.
This initiative marks a significant milestone in enhancing the Indian Army's technological capabilities, aligning with the Chief of Army Staff's declared vision for 2024 as the 'Year of Technological Absorption for the Indian Army'.
Today's MoU signing is expected to reinvigorate this collaboration, with plans to establish an 'Advanced Military Research and Incubation Centre' at MCTE. This centre aims to focus on Advanced Wireless Technologies for the Indian Army.
The partnership between SAMEER and MCTE goes beyond an agreement; it signifies a shared commitment to exploring new technological frontiers and addressing modern battlefield challenges.
By combining SAMEER's expertise in wireless technologies with MCTE's application skills in communications, electronic warfare, and cyber operations, the collaboration promises significant advancements in the defence and strategic sectors.
The key objectives of this partnership include enhancing national security and technological infrastructure through collaboration between SAMEER and MCTE. The potential benefits are anticipated to extend beyond military applications to broader sectors, as stated in the official announcement.

During the MoU signing ceremony, Maj Gen C S Mann, AVSM, VSM, Additional Director General of Army Design Bureau elaborated on the Indian Army perspective on the absorption of niche technologies. He explained the efforts taken towards creating an ecosystem for the development of various emerging technology-based solutions for military applications.
S K Marwaha, Group Coordinator at MeitY, highlighted various initiatives by MeitY for defence and strategic applications. He also underscored the contributions of SAMEER and CDAC in the strategic and defence sectors.
Dr P H Rao, signatory of the MoU from SAMEER, provided insights into SAMEER's extensive work in the defence sector and outlined an ambitious vision under the MoU to develop field-deployable solutions for the Indian Army, particularly focusing on critical technological domains.
Lt Gen K H Gawas, PVSM, VSM, Commandant of MCTE and Colonel Commandant of Corps of Signals, emphasised the significance of the MoU and outlined MCTE's expectations. He highlighted the MoU's objective to develop field-deployable solutions in tactical battle areas through collaborative efforts involving MCTE, SAMEER, academia, industry, researchers, and start-ups. The goal is to create an ecosystem with a whole-of-nation approach to achieve technological advancements for the Indian Army.
He expressed confidence that this partnership will pave the way for groundbreaking achievements and set a new standard for collaboration between government R&D institutes and military educational institutions. Lt Gen K H Gawas emphasised that this collaboration will play an instrumental role in the national initiative of 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' (self-reliant India).
