The Indian Army on Monday rejected reports that claimed the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) had recently entered Indian territory and set up new camps in Arunachal Pradesh. The Army described the reports as false and said they had no factual support.
In an official statement quoted by ANI, the Indian Army said, "We have seen some media reports alleging recent encroachment by Chinese PLA and setting up of camps in Arunachal Pradesh. These reports are incorrect and without any basis." The statement came after reports raised concerns about the presence of Chinese forces in some border areas of the state.
The issue surfaced after the Nah Welfare Society (NWS), a community organisation from Arunachal Pradesh's Upper Subansiri district, submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner. The organisation claimed that Chinese forces had expanded their presence in areas close to the border.
In a letter dated June 26, the NWS identified five locations that it alleged were under Chinese occupation. The organisation stated that the PLA had taken control of large areas traditionally used by the local tribal community for grazing livestock, hunting and farming. It also claimed that this situation had developed over the past six years.
The reports emerged only a few weeks after India and China held the 35th meeting of the Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination (WMCC) on India-China Border Affairs in Beijing. The meeting focused on reviewing the situation along the India-China border and discussing measures to maintain stability.
After the meeting, the Ministry of External Affairs said the discussions were constructive and forward-looking. Both countries reviewed the overall situation in the border areas. They also expressed satisfaction with the progress made in maintaining peace and tranquillity along the border.
Earlier on Monday, Indian Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi also spoke about the situation along the Line of Actual Control (LAC). During an interview with NDTV, he said the conditions at the border remain stable, although the situation continues to be sensitive.
The Army Chief said the Indian Army maintains a robust deployment to deter threats and respond to contingencies. He also noted that tensions between India and China have shown signs of easing. His remarks came as the Army strongly denied the recent reports of fresh Chinese encroachment in Arunachal Pradesh and reiterated that the claims had no basis.
