The Indian Army reaffirmed its strong commitment to supporting Gorkha veterans at a grand Ex-Servicemen (ESM) Rally held at the Pension Paying Office (PPO) in Pokhara, Nepal. The event saw a large gathering of veterans and their families and was attended by Lt Gen Zubin A Minwalla, UYSM, AVSM, YSM, who serves as the General Officer Commanding 33 Corps and Colonel of the Regiment, 9th Gorkha Rifles.
In his speech, Lt Gen Minwalla honoured the sacrifices of Gorkha soldiers, paying tribute to gallantry award winners and Veer Naris (war widows) as a sign of deep respect for their service. Lt Gen Minwalla assured that the Indian Army and the Government of India are fully committed to the well-being of ex-servicemen. Various welfare programs are actively being implemented to support them. The rally gave veterans an opportunity to interact with senior Indian Army officials, express their concerns, and receive updates on pension and welfare schemes. Their enthusiastic participation highlighted the strong bond between India and Nepal and the Indian Army’s continued support for its retired personnel in Nepal.
During his visit to Nepal, Lt Gen Minwalla also met with senior Nepal Army officials to strengthen military ties and discuss future areas of cooperation. Gorkhas, known for their steadfast devotion, combat expertise, and brave attitude, has been an essential component of the Indian Army for more than 200 years. From World Wars I and II until Kargil in 1999, they have been essential to counterinsurgency efforts, peacekeeping missions and major conflicts. India's highest military accolade, the Param Vir Chakra, is among the several gallantry decorations bestowed upon their regiments.
The Gorkhas' renowned battle cry, "Jai Mahakali, Ayo Gorkhali!" still serves as a testament to their unwavering bravery and warrior mentality. The Indian Army is committed to supporting its Gorkha veterans and strengthening the long-standing bond between India and Nepal. Through continuous welfare efforts and strong support, the proud legacy of the Gorkha regiments continues to flourish.
