Demonstrating a notable advancement in its capabilities, the Indian Army has successfully integrated 600 domestically manufactured self-neutralizing anti-tank mines, known as "Vibhav." These mines mark a significant achievement for the army, enhancing its defensive capabilities against enemy armoured vehicles.
As per official statements, these mines are constructed using modern plastic materials, endowing them with robustness and durability. This design ensures they can be stored, handled, and deployed effectively in a range of field conditions.
"It (the 'Vibhav' anti-tank mine) is already in production. It has been completed. It is now in demand. It has been inducted into the Indian Army. Six hundred mines have been inducted," an official of the manufacturing company told PTI.
Officials have noted that "Vibhav" is a point-attack anti-tank munition, designed and developed entirely through an indigenous collaboration with India's Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). These mines have been engineered to deliver mobility kills against all types of enemy armored vehicles.
"Made from new age plastic, the mines have adequate strength and durability to withstand the requirements of storage, handling, and operating in varying field conditions," the official mentioned above said. He further added the munition can be laid both mechanically or manually.
"Vibhav" incorporates a comprehensive array of safety and actuation mechanisms, meticulously designed to prioritize safe handling, target effectiveness, and reliability, according to officials. The integration of explosive, mechanical, and electronic safety features is geared toward ensuring the highest level of operator safety.
Furthermore, the officials emphasized that the munition's lethality extends to both existing and future armored vehicles. Additionally, "Vibhav" includes an electronic anti-handling and anti-lift device (EAHALD) that remains active for a duration of 120 days once armed.
"We have made three changes in this mine. It has mechanical timers now. Due to this, after 120 days, it will be self-neutralised. It was not available in the earlier mines," one of the officials said.
The production of this munition for the Indian Army is entrusted to the Kalyani Group. Notably, "Vibhav" boasts a commendable storage life of 10 years without necessitating any specific storage conditions, providing a practical advantage in terms of maintenance and logistics, as highlighted by the officials.
