The Tawang region witnessed a spectacular confluence of various events marking a historic celebration of unity and athleticism. Chief Minister Pema Khandu, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju, Lieutenant General Manish Erry, and Bollywood actor Randeep Hooda graced the event with their presence during its inauguration.
The marathon showcased the picturesque landscapes of the Tawang region, offering participants four categories to choose from 5 km, 10 km, 21 km (half), and 42 km (full). This event, occurring in October, holds special significance as it aligns with the month when India faced Chinese aggression in 1962.
Lieutenant General Erry expressed his sentiments during a cultural event organized on Friday, stating, "The beauty here is par excellence. Both these events - Tawang marathon and National Tug of War Championship – are a celebration." He highlighted the strong sense of nationalism that resonates in the region and expressed hope for these events to become an annual tradition in Tawang.
In addition to the marathon, the National Tug of War Championship also commenced with an inauguration by Chief Minister Khandu. The championship saw the participation of 429 individuals from 14 states, along with their team managements, state officials, and coaches. This two-day event concluded on October 1, coinciding with the marathon.
Chief Minister Khandu encouraged both players and tourists to explore the rich biodiversity of the state up to the border, emphasizing the chant of "Bharat Mata ki Jai" when visiting the border.
The excitement surrounding these events extended beyond the participants and organizers to the local residents. The increased tourism promised better income opportunities for the locals. Hakam Tanjang, an employee at Hotel Tawang Heights, shared their excitement, stating, "We are excited to serve so many guests. Usually, we have 10-15 rooms booked at a time when currently 31 rooms are occupied."
Tawang has witnessed notable improvements in road and network connectivity in recent years, especially since the 2020 Galwan clash in Ladakh prompted increased attention to border infrastructure. Additionally, the Vibrant Village Programme, launched by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, has facilitated development in over 230 villages in Tawang, enhancing connectivity and employment prospects for locals.
Leki Phuntso, the gram pradhan of Berkhar village, expressed support for Indian forces in safeguarding the region against any misadventures by China. Officials believe that such mega-events and allowing people to travel up to the Line of Actual Control (LAC) send a message to China about India's assertive stance.
"This sends a message to China that it is not the same India of 1962," noted an unnamed officer, emphasizing the importance of such events in reinforcing India's position near the border.
