India is significantly upgrading its military infrastructure in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands as part of a broader strategy to enhance its strategic presence in the Indian Ocean. This move comes amid growing concerns about Chinese activities and the militarisation of Myanmar’s Coco Islands, located just 50 kilometres away.
Established in 2001, the Andaman and Nicobar Command (ANC) is India's sole tri-service theatre command, tasked with securing the Bay of Bengal and surrounding waters. Despite criticism as a “giant failure,” the ANC has seen steady development, including the establishment of a naval air base at Campbell Bay and plans for runway extensions and new facilities.
Recent upgrades include expanding surveillance infrastructure, extending airstrips to accommodate larger military aircraft, and constructing a permanent habitat for troops. The Indian Air Force station will house fighter squadrons, and a new container transhipment terminal will enhance operational capacities. Additionally, improvements are underway to a vital road linking the islands’ northern and southern regions.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has highlighted the islands' critical role in India's Act East Policy, emphasising their importance in strengthening relations with East Asian countries. The infrastructure enhancements are seen as a response to China’s increased focus on the Coco Islands and Myanmar’s evolving maritime capabilities.
Reports indicate that Myanmar is expanding its maritime surveillance operations on the Coco Islands, with new runways, radar stations, and hangars. This development raises concerns that China could benefit from intelligence gathered through Myanmar's increased military presence.
India’s infrastructure push in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, driven by regional security concerns, reflects a strategic effort to leverage its maritime advantages and counterbalance Chinese influence in the Indian Ocean. The upgrades aim to bolster India's defensive and operational capabilities while enhancing its strategic partnerships.
