The Indian government is launching a major rescue mission to bring back 540 Indian citizens who were trapped in scam call centres in Myawaddy, Myanmar. Many of them were tricked with fake job offers. A C-17 military aircraft will be sent on March 10-11 to repatriate them. These individuals have been stranded at the Thai-Myanmar border for weeks, waiting for help.
Embassy officials and the Border Guard Force have confirmed that a special plane will be set up on March 11 or 12 to evacuate the Indians, according to K. Madhukar Reddy, a native of Rangapeta village in Karimnagar, Telangana, who is currently at the border. "We were told that we will be taken to Mae Sot Thailand after crossing the border tonight," Reddy told The Times of India. The process will be similar to how Chinese nationals caught in similar scams are sent back. When the Indian nationals arrive at the Mae Sot-Myawaddy border checkpoint, Thailand will refuse them entry as per immigration rules.
Right after that, Thai authorities will hand them over to Indian officials at Mae Sot International Airport. From there, they will take two flights back to India. The people who are stuck are from Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal and other Indian states. Many have been detained for more than two weeks, and they are all yearning to get out of the circumstances in the detention facilities. "We just want to get out of these detention centres and return home," one of the victims told TOI. An Indian national currently in detention described the conditions, saying, "The accommodation is decent at Myawaddy detention. They have provided well-maintained AC rooms, but the food is inadequate-sometimes we get one meal a day, occasionally two."
He did, however, add that things were considerably worse close to immigration at the border. "There are over 500 people there, with no proper toilets or food. They are forced to stay in army camp-like tents. When we arrived, they took away everyone's mobile phones." The Indian government is working closely with Myanmar and Thailand to bring back its citizens trapped in international cybercrime syndicates operating in the region. This rescue effort is part of India’s larger plan to stop fake job networks that take advantage of Indian workers in other countries.
