India has jumped to third position in the Asia Power Index surpassing Japan, according to an annual report published by a think-tank Australia. This rise has been ascribed to India's effective economic recovery since the onset of COVID-19. Meanwhile, China's influence seems to level out and stands at second position just one notch below that of the United States.
The US topped the Lowy Institute's Asia Power Index, which is based in Sydney, with a score of 81.7. China came in second with a score of 72.7, India (39.1), Japan (38.9), Australia (31.9), and Russia (31.1). According to the Index, which has an impact as far north as Russia, as far west as Pakistan, and as far into the Pacific as Australia, New Zealand, and the United States, 27 nations and territories are ranked according to their ability to influence their external environment.
India's rise has been attributed by the index to its economic growth, potential in the future, and diplomatic influence. It has, however, highlighted the fact that New Delhi's influence is still less than what its resources could potentially achieve. Speaking on India’s significant rise, the think tank said, “India has shown remarkable post-pandemic economic recovery, contributing to a 4.2-point rise in its economic capability. India's massive population and strong GDP growth reinforce its standing as the world's third-largest economy in PPP terms.”
It has been observed that there is a growing recognition of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership on a global scale. According to the think tank, India has been able to successfully navigate challenging international waters, thanks to its non-aligned strategic posture. Even though New Delhi is not a part of official military alliances, it has claimed that India's leadership in the Quad and participation in dialogues have allowed it to play a significant role in regional security dynamics.
