The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Friday reiterated India's position on the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, emphasising its support for any feasible and mutually acceptable solution that could restore peace. During a press briefing, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated, "The decision as to when and how to commence peace talks is the prerogative of the two parties to the conflict. As friends and partners, we would support any feasible and mutually acceptable solution or format that could restore peace."
Addressing questions about Indian nationals stuck in Russia, Jaiswal confirmed that 15 Indians who were stranded have been released and have returned to India. He added that the Indian Embassy in Russia remains in close contact with Russian authorities to facilitate the return of any remaining Indians who wish to leave. "We have an update as of now, as of today we have 15 Indians who have been released and they have returned to India. There are others who are waiting for discharge. Our mission, our embassy, is in touch with Russian authorities, and we hope that those who want to return back to India will be released soon," Jaiswal stated.
Jaiswal further noted that India has consistently advocated for constructive, solution-oriented, and practical engagement with all stakeholders to achieve a negotiated settlement to the Russia-Ukraine conflict. This position aligns with recent diplomatic efforts, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Ukraine, where he met with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and reiterated India's stance on peace through dialogue.
"PM has already indicated India's willingness to play a constructive role in the interest of peace. However, it is too early to comment on specific modalities and pathways at this stage," Jaiswal added.
In addition to the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Jaiswal addressed concerns about Indian nationals stranded at São Paulo International Airport in Brazil. The MEA spokesperson confirmed that the Indian Consulate in São Paulo is in communication with the Brazilian Foreign Office representative and is seeking further information. "As far as the issue of Indians stranded in the international airport in São Paulo is concerned, yes, we are aware. There are several Indians. We also have a consulate in São Paulo. The consulate is in touch with the foreign office representative in the city. They have also sought a meeting with the local authorities. Let me tell you what was reported in some medium, the Indians there at the airport are being taken care of in terms of food, nourishment, etc.," Jaiswal noted.
Meanwhile, the MEA highlighted India’s ongoing efforts to strengthen relations with African nations. Speaking at a Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) event on Africa, the MEA underscored the historic and special nature of India-Africa relations and expressed India's desire to amplify the voice of the Global South. "India-Africa relations are historic and special. Together with our African friends and partners, we want to strengthen the voice of the Global South. We are also keen to deepen our economic partnership with them," the spokesperson said.
He added that the 19th CII India-Africa Conclave held in Delhi, which saw participation from Vice Presidents and Ministers from multiple African countries, significantly boosted economic ties between India and African nations.
