An Indian defence facility off the coast of Odisha successfully conducted the inaugural test of a next-generation surface-to-surface short range ballistic missile (SRBM) Pralay on Wednesday. It launched from a launch complex IV at APJ Abdul Kalam Island at approximately 10.15 am. The new missile was developed by Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
With a high degree of accuracy, this missile reached its target after launching from a canister following a quasi-ballistic trajectory and following a desired trajectory. This validates the control, guidance and mission algorithms.
A defence official said, “the mission has met all its objectives. All the sub-systems performed satisfactorily”. “The sensors deployed near the impact point across the eastern coast and the down range ships tracked the missile trajectory and captured all the events”, he added.
In addition to solid propellant rocket motors, the missile is equipped with many new technologies. The missile can reach targets at a distance of 500 km, carrying a payload of around 1000 kg. An integrated navigation system and avionics are included with the missile guidance system. In a matter of seconds, it can be launched from a mobile launcher.
Dr G Satheesh Reddy, Secretary of Defence (Research and Development) and Chairman of DRDO, said the missile is a new generation surface-to-surface weapon equipped with modern technology. Several experimental tests will be conducted before it is introduced into the military. A quick induction of the unit will give the armed forces much needed momentum, he said.
In addition to Pralay, DRDO successfully tested 2000 km range nuclear missile Agni Prime at the same facility a couple of weeks earlier.
DRDO and its associated teams were congratulated by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh for this first developmental flight trial of Pralay. His compliments were aimed at the defence scientists for the fast-track development and successful launch of some advanced missile systems recently.
A first test of Pralay had originally been scheduled for 2018, but was reportedly postponed for administrative reasons. Chinese Dongfeng 12 and Russian 9K720 Iskander, both short-range tactical ballistic missiles, can be compared with the Pralay, which is much faster and more accurate.
