On September 6th, Indian officials announced the successful test-fire of the Agni-4 ballistic missile. The launch involved the Intermediate Range Ballistic Missile (IRBM), Agni-4 that took place at the Integrated Test Range located in Chandipur, Odisha.
The test was conducted with the aim of validating the missile's operational readiness and technical performance. The Agni-4, which is designed to enhance India's strategic capabilities, was launched under the oversight of the Strategic Forces Command, which is a crucial part of India's Nuclear Command Authority (NCA). This successful test reaffirms India's ongoing commitment to strengthening its defence and deterrence mechanisms.
The launch effectively confirmed that the missile met all specified operational and technical criteria. This test was carried out with the oversight of the Strategic Forces Command, an integral component of India's Nuclear Command Authority (NCA). The successful validation of the missile’s performance underscores its readiness and reliability as part of India's strategic defence infrastructure. The Strategic Forces Command’s involvement ensures that the test aligns with the nation's stringent standards for nuclear deterrence and missile technology.
The Agni-4 missile boasts an extended range, reaching up to 4,000 kilometres, which represents a significant advancement in India's missile capabilities. Measuring 20 meters in length, the Agni-4 is capable of delivering a payload weighing up to 1,000 kilograms. Additionally, its design allows it to be launched from a road-mobile platform, enhancing its flexibility and deployment options.
In its 2012 test launch, the Agni-4 demonstrated its impressive range by travelling over 3,000 kilometres in just 20 minutes, marking it as the longest-range mission conducted by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) at that time. Previously known as the Agni-2 Prime, the Agni-4 is part of the Agni series of missiles, which are developed and designed by the DRDO.
The evolution of these missiles is highlighted by the introduction of the Agni-5, showcasing significant advancements in India's indigenously developed missile technology and reinforcing the country’s strategic defence capabilities.
