India successfully carried out a salvo launch of two indigenously developed Pralay missiles from the same launcher off the coast of Odisha on Wednesday. This test was conducted as part of the user evaluation trials for the missile system and took place around 10:30 a.m. near the Integrated Test Range at Chandipur on the Odisha coast.
According to the official statement from the Ministry of Defence, both missiles followed their planned flight paths and accomplished all their flight objectives. Sensors placed by the Integrated Test Range monitored their performance in real time, while telemetry systems installed on a ship located near the designated impact points confirmed the final events. The test demonstrated that the missile system is reliable and operationally ready.
The Pralay missile is a solid-propellant, quasi-ballistic surface-to-surface missile developed entirely in India. It has advanced guidance and navigation systems, which help in striking targets with high precision. The defence ministry statement said the missile can carry different types of warheads and strike a range of strategic targets.
The defence ministry noted that the missile has been developed by the Research Centre Imarat in Hyderabad in close cooperation with several DRDO laboratories and Indian industry partners. Bharat Dynamics Limited and Bharat Electronics Limited acted as the development-cum-production partners and helped integrate the systems for the test.
Senior scientists from DRDO, representatives from the Indian Air Force and the Indian Army, and officials from the defence industry were present to witness the successful launch.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh praised the success of the test and congratulated the teams involved. He said that completing the salvo launch proved that the Pralay missile system is reliable and ready for further evaluation. His full quote in the official statement was, “The completion of the salvo launch established the reliability of the Pralay missile system.”
Dr. Samir V Kamat, Chairman of DRDO and Secretary of the Department of Defence R&D, congratulated the team. He said that the success of these flight tests shows that the missile system is nearing the stage where it may be formally inducted into the Indian armed forces. His exact words in the statement were, “The successful flight tests indicate that the missile system is nearing induction into the armed forces.”
The successful test firing of both missiles during user evaluation trials adds to India’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its indigenous defence capabilities.
