India has strongly condemned the defacement of its embassy in Ljubljana, Slovenia, and urged Slovenian authorities to identify and take action against those responsible. The incident involved anti-India slogans being written on the premises of the Indian diplomatic mission. People familiar with the matter said pro-Khalistan elements were behind the incident.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) raised the issue with Slovenian authorities and called the act reprehensible. “We condemn the defacement of the premises of our embassy in Ljubljana, Slovenia, by anti-India elements,” the external affairs ministry said in a statement. The ministry did not provide details on the identity of those responsible.

People familiar with the matter said the embassy was defaced with anti-India slogans by individuals linked to pro-Khalistan groups. The incident has once again raised concerns over the activities of such groups against Indian diplomatic missions abroad. India has faced similar incidents in several countries in recent years.

The MEA also stressed the need to protect diplomatic premises under international law. It said the Vienna Convention requires diplomatic missions to remain protected from such acts. “The external affairs ministry said that under the Vienna Convention, diplomatic premises are “inviolable and must be protected”.” The ministry underlined that the safety and security of diplomatic premises remain a responsibility of the host country.

India has taken up the matter strongly with Slovenian authorities in both New Delhi and Ljubljana. The government has also maintained that diplomatic missions must be protected in line with international obligations. The incident in Slovenia has now prompted India to seek accountability and greater attention from local law enforcement agencies.
