India has recently intensified its diplomatic efforts to strengthen water resource management through high-level meetings with Tanzania and Zimbabwe, as announced by Jal Shakti Minister C R Paatil. These discussions were part of the ongoing National Water Week 2024 focusing on collaborative strategies to address critical water issues and support sustainable development.
During a significant meeting with the Zimbabwean delegation led by Deputy Minister V P Haritatos, Paatil emphasised the importance of improving water management and driving agricultural reforms in Zimbabwe. Haritatos highlighted the need for increased Indian investment in Zimbabwe's water sector, particularly the pivotal role that Indian companies like WAPCOS could play in this regard. In response, Paatil assured the delegation of India’s commitment to providing comprehensive technical assistance and fostering close cooperation to address Zimbabwe’s water-related challenges.
Paatil elaborated, “Ensuring food security and supporting sustainable growth through innovative solutions in irrigation system design, improved water supply, and enhanced irrigation efficiency were identified as key areas for collaboration.” He also emphasised that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India is dedicated to forging a robust partnership with Zimbabwe that transcends borders and aims for a future where water resources are managed sustainably for the benefit of all involved.
In a separate but equally important meeting with Tanzania’s Water Minister, Paatil discussed the potential for a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to enhance bilateral collaboration in water resource management. The two sides agreed on the importance of sharing expertise and strengthening technical cooperation in vital areas such as water conservation, rainwater harvesting, surface and groundwater management, and aquifer recharge. Paatil stated, “Tanzania expressed deep gratitude for the Indian Government's grants supporting water supply projects, and the significant contributions of WAPCOS were acknowledged.”
He further noted, “Together, we are working towards a future where water is preserved, managed, and utilised effectively for the welfare of all communities involved.”
Additionally, Paatil met with World Water Council President Loic Fauchon, who extended an invitation for India to join the prestigious global platform. This invitation reflects the growing recognition of India’s role and contributions in the field of global water management.
These recent diplomatic engagements highlight India’s proactive stance in international water resource management and demonstrate the country’s ongoing commitment to global water sustainability initiatives. Through these collaborations, India aims to support and enhance water management practices across the globe, reinforcing its role as a leading partner in addressing global water challenges.
