India and South Korea on Monday took a major step towards strengthening their bilateral relationship as both countries signed several Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) to expand cooperation across key sectors. The agreements mark a fresh push to deepen ties between New Delhi and Seoul and signal a new phase in the partnership between the two nations.
During a joint press statement, Prime Minister Narendra Modi described South Korean President Lee Jae Myung’s visit as highly significant for the future of India-South Korea relations. He said the visit lays the foundation for a more advanced and future-ready framework of cooperation. Welcoming the Korean President on his first visit to India, PM Modi also highlighted the personal significance of the moment.
"I am delighted to welcome President Lee on his first visit to India. President Lee's life is an inspiring example of struggle, service, and dedication. Every challenge has only strengthened his resolve to serve the people. Although this is his first visit to India, his affinity for India has been evident since our very first meeting," PM Modi said.
The Prime Minister stressed that the visit comes at an important time, especially as both countries continue to share common values and strategic interests. He underlined that democracy, a market-based economy, and respect for the rule of law are central to both India and South Korea. He also noted that both countries have a similar vision for the Indo-Pacific region, making their cooperation even more relevant.
"This visit of the President of Korea to India is extremely important. Democratic values, market economy, and respect for the rule of law are in the DNA of both our countries. We also have a common outlook in the Indo-Pacific region," he added.
PM Modi said that over the last decade, ties between India and South Korea have become more dynamic and wide-ranging. He stated that President Lee’s visit would now help take this trusted relationship into a more futuristic and comprehensive stage. According to him, the partnership is set to grow across several important sectors that are crucial for both economic development and strategic cooperation.
"Based on all this, our relations have become more dynamic and comprehensive over the last decade, and today, with President Lee's visit, we are going to transform this trusted partnership into a futuristic partnership. We will realise new opportunities for cooperation in every field, from chips to ships, talent to technology, environment to energy, and together ensure the progress and prosperity of both countries," he said.
South Korean President Lee Jae Myung also highlighted the economic potential of the growing relationship. He said both sides have agreed to significantly increase their trade engagement over the next few years. At present, the annual trade volume between India and South Korea stands at around USD 25 billion, and both countries now aim to double it by the end of the decade.
"In the era of uncertainty, we share our view that India and Korea can be the most ideal partners for comprehensive cooperation to promote mutual growth and innovation. We have also agreed to enhance cooperation in strategic industries, including shipbuilding, AI, finance, and defence and promote culture and people-to-people exchanges," he added.
President Lee’s remarks reflected a broader vision of cooperation that goes beyond trade and investment. The discussions between the two leaders also focused on emerging and strategic sectors such as artificial intelligence, semiconductors, finance, defence, and critical technologies. Both sides also placed emphasis on strengthening cultural ties and people-to-people exchanges, which are seen as important for building long-term understanding and cooperation.
Another major area of discussion was the Indo-Pacific region. Both India and South Korea agreed to work together to maintain peace, stability, and inclusivity in the region. This shared commitment reflects the strategic importance of the Indo-Pacific in current global politics and trade routes.
"Following President Lee's visit, we are going to transform our trusted collaboration into a futuristic partnership," Modi said.
The economic partnership between the two countries has been steadily growing since the implementation of the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) in 2010. This agreement gave a major push to bilateral trade and investment relations and helped create stronger business links between the two economies. The new MoUs signed during this visit are expected to build further on that momentum.
Emphasising the wide scope of future cooperation, PM Modi once again pointed to the diverse sectors where both nations can work together.
"From chips to ships, talent to technology, entertainment to energy, we will realise new opportunities for cooperation in every sector," he added.
The Prime Minister also reiterated India’s commitment to working with South Korea for a peaceful and progressive Indo-Pacific region.
"Through our shared efforts, we will continue to contribute to a peaceful, progressive, and inclusive Indo-Pacific," he said.
Overall, the talks reflected a strong intent from both countries to expand cooperation in trade, investments, technology, defence, and regional security. President Lee’s visit is being seen as a crucial diplomatic step that could redefine India-South Korea relations in the coming years, with both nations looking at stronger economic growth, strategic collaboration, and regional stability.
