India and Slovakia on Monday upgraded their bilateral relationship to a Comprehensive Partnership following talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico in Bratislava. The decision is aimed at strengthening cooperation in several key sectors, including trade, defence, innovation, and economic development. The development came during PM Modi’s historic visit to Slovakia, the first-ever visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the country.
The two leaders also agreed to work towards the earliest implementation of the India-European Union Free Trade Agreement (FTA). The agreement is expected to significantly boost economic ties between India and European nations, including Slovakia. Both sides expressed confidence that the trade pact would create new opportunities for businesses, startups, and investors.
Addressing the media after the talks, Prime Minister Modi highlighted the importance of the upgraded relationship between the two countries. He said, "We have decided to elevate our relations to the status of a Comprehensive Partnership. This symbolises our shared beliefs, shared priorities, and shared future."
The Prime Minister also acknowledged Slovakia’s support in advancing discussions related to the India-EU Free Trade Agreement. Stressing the economic benefits of the proposed pact, Modi said, "We will work towards its earliest implementation so that industries, startups, and traders of both countries can derive maximum benefit from it."
Defence cooperation emerged as another major area of discussion during the meeting. Both countries agreed to deepen collaboration in the sector. A Letter of Intent on defence cooperation was finalised following the talks between the two leaders. The agreement is expected to strengthen engagement between the defence industries of India and Slovakia and open new avenues for future cooperation.
Highlighting the significance of defence ties, Prime Minister Modi said the growing partnership in the sector reflects the strong trust shared by the two nations. According to him, defence cooperation between India and Slovakia is a testament to the "deep mutual trust and strategic convergence" between the two sides.
The finalisation of the Letter of Intent is expected to provide fresh momentum to defence-related collaboration. It will encourage greater interaction between defence manufacturers and institutions in both countries while supporting future joint initiatives.
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico also welcomed the progress in India-EU trade negotiations. Speaking about the proposed free trade agreement, he described it as one of the most significant trade deals currently under discussion. Fico said, "Slovakia not only welcomes this agreement, but it will take the necessary and practical steps for the implementation of this agreement."
His remarks reflected Slovakia’s commitment to ensuring that the benefits of the agreement are realised once it comes into effect. The support from Slovakia is expected to contribute positively to the broader India-EU economic engagement.
PM Modi’s visit to Bratislava is part of his week-long tour of Europe. The visit holds special significance as it marks the first time an Indian Prime Minister has travelled to Slovakia. The discussions and agreements reached during the visit underline the growing importance of India-Slovakia relations and signal a stronger partnership in the years ahead.
The elevation of ties to a Comprehensive Partnership, progress on the India-EU Free Trade Agreement, and enhanced defence cooperation collectively mark a new chapter in relations between the two countries. Both leaders expressed a shared commitment to expanding cooperation across sectors and building a stronger future-oriented partnership.
