India has shown its readiness to cooperate with Bangladesh's Interim Government, according to the Indian ambassador in Dhaka, as there are concerns in India about the treatment of minorities in Bangladesh.
In response to a security breach at its premises, Bangladesh has suspended all operations at its Assistant High Commission in Agartala. In turn, India has increased security around Bangladesh's missions and Bangladesh has also heightened security for Indian missions. Following a meeting with Bangladesh's Acting Foreign Secretary Riaz Hamidullah, Indian High Commissioner in Bangladesh Pranay Verma told reporters, "We are willing to engage with the Interim Government of Bangladesh and we remain interested in working with the Government of Bangladesh to fulfil our shared aspirations for peace, security, and development."
On Tuesday afternoon, Bangladesh summoned the Indian High Commissioner to the Foreign Ministry in Dhaka. The High Commissioner met with Acting Foreign Secretary Riaz Hamidullah. Bangladesh also handed over a "protest note" to the Indian High Commissioner, according to a Bangladesh Foreign Ministry official, although no further details were provided. "This is something that we keep continuing talking. We have a wide ranging relationship, multi-faceted relationship and as I have said you cannot reduce it to one issue or one agenda," Verma said. "We are working across so many issues. We really want to build a positive, stable, constructive relationship moving forward. So many things we are doing. There are so many inter-dependencies we have and we want to build on those inter-dependencies to mutual benefits. We will keep ensuring our cooperation benefits our two peoples," he added.
"Numbers of positive developments have taken place in our relationship in the last few months, whether it is trade, it is power transmission, supply of essential commodities. We have maintained a lot of positive momentum in our relationship," said Verma. Extra precautions have been taken by Bangladeshi law enforcement to ensure the safety of India's diplomatic missions there. "We, police, army and other forces have taken appropriate measures for the safety and security of the Indian High Commission in Dhaka," Tareq Mahmud, a police official, told the reporters standing outside the High Commission. Yesterday, the occurrence of the breach of premises at the Bangladesh Assistant High Commission in Agartala was described as "deeply regrettable" by India.
"Diplomatic and consular properties should not be targeted under any circumstances. Government is taking action to step up security arrangements for the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi and their Deputy/Assistant High Commissions in the country," the Ministry of External Affairs stated in a statement.
