India has handed over the first batch of components for ten prefabricated steel bridges to Nepal as part of its ongoing support to the country's reconstruction efforts. The move follows a request from the Government of Nepal to help restore road connectivity, which has been severely disrupted by recent floods and landslides.
The components, worth over Rs 380 million, were provided as a grant by the Government of India, according to a statement from the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu. Devi Sahaya Meena, the Consul General of India in Birgunj, formally handed over the materials to Dinesh Sagar Bhusal, the Chief District Officer of Parsa, on Wednesday.
In addition to the bridge components, India has also provided significant humanitarian assistance to Nepal over the past two days. More than 25 tons of relief materials have been delivered, including essential items such as medicines, cleaning materials, life jackets, sleeping mats, and food supplies. The aid package also included inflatable rubber boats, blankets, chlorine tablets, and water bottles to assist families affected by the natural disaster.
This support highlights the strong bilateral ties between India and Nepal, particularly during times of crisis. The bridges will play a crucial role in restoring vital road networks that were damaged, while the relief materials will help address the immediate needs of communities hit hardest by the disaster.
The Government of Nepal expressed appreciation for India's timely assistance, which is expected to accelerate recovery efforts and improve the lives of those affected by the floods and landslides.
