India and Mauritania signed several agreements on Thursday during President Droupadi Murmu's visit, including ones pertaining to visa exemption and diplomat training. President Murmu and her counterpart from Mauritania, Mohamed Ould Ghazouani, met at the Presidential Palace in Nouakchott on Thursday.
The two leaders talked about ways to further improve their relations. Murmu reached Mauritania on Wednesday as a part of her visit to three African countries. This is the first time an Indian high-ranking official has visited Mauritania since the African country gained its independence in 1960.
"President Droupadi Murmu met and held talks with President Mohamed Ould Ghazouani of Mauritania at the Presidential Palace in Nouakchott. Both leaders discussed ways to further strengthen the relationship," said the President’s office in a post on X. Post further said, “Four MoUs in the areas of training of diplomats, cultural exchange, visa exemption and Foreign Office consultations were signed and exchanged on the occasion.”
She thanked the host country, saying, "I express my gratitude to the government and people of Mauritania for always supporting the Indian community." President Murmu emphasised the potential for collaboration between India and Mauritania, pointing out that India could support Mauritania's growth in a number of areas, such as infrastructure, agriculture, health, education, skill development, digital innovation, and human resource development.
President Murmu's Mauritanian counterpart, Mohamed Ould Ghazouani, welcomed her when she arrived at Nouakchott-Oumtounsy Airport. According to her office, a formal welcome was given to her. Mauritania's abundant natural resources are crucial to India's expanding industry.
In order to strengthen bilateral ties, Murmu met with her Algerian counterpart Abdelmadjid Tebboune during her successful trip to Algeria. Later on in her trip, she will make her final stop in Malawi.
