His speech highlighted the two countries' long-standing strategic and defence ties, highlighting their shared commitment to regional security, peace, and stability.
Singh reflected on President Mohamed Muizzu's recent visit to India, expressing, "I recall our brief meeting with you during President Mohamed Muizzu's state visit to India in October 2024. The President of the Maldives' visit has created a new direction for our bilateral relationship, and the Joint Vision Document issued during the visit serves as a guiding principle for our two nations."
He pointed out the nations' centuries-old spiritual, historical, linguistic, and ethnic links, portraying their bond as "close, cordial and multidimensional."
The Minister also praised India and the Maldives' strong people-to-people acquaintances and their defence collaboration. As part of continuous efforts, India has supplied considerable training, equipment and assistance to improve the Maldives' defence capabilities. Singh emphasised that India and the Maldives' developing collaboration has benefited not just bilateral relations but also the more significant security picture in the Indian Ocean region.
Additionally, the Defence Minister confirmed India's commitment to assisting the Maldives in battling against terrorism and other security problems. He added that increasing defence links is critical to their comprehensive and diversified partnership, which benefits both countries' long-term strategic objectives. He also mentioned continued infrastructure support and cooperative training sessions, which help both nations prepare for defence.
The Defence Minister stated India and the Maldives shared responsibility for securing Indian Ocean security. He noted that both nations serve the region's Security and Growth for All (SAGAR) framework, demonstrating their mutual dedication to regional stability.
Regarding geography, the Maldives' location on India's west coast and presence along crucial marine trade routes highlight their strategic importance. Tourism also contributes to the Maldivian economy, accounting for around a quarter of its GDP and providing many job opportunities. With indirect assistance, the tourist sector accounts for over 70% of total employment in the Maldives, emphasising its importance to the economy.
