India launches new database at UN to promote accountability for crimes against peacekeepers

An official release stated that the India-led Group of Friends (GOF), consisting of 40 member states, held its second meeting to discuss strategies for enhancing legal frameworks against those who commit malicious acts against peacekeepers. The meeting aimed to promote accountability for such crimes and focused on supporting measures to ensure perpetrators are held accountable.

It marked a significant step towards accountability by launching a dedicated database, sponsored by India, to serve as an online repository. The database, hosted on the Unite Aware platform, empowers the Secretariat, Missions, and member states to monitor and address cases of malicious acts against Peacekeepers comprehensively. This initiative is poised to facilitate comprehensive analysis and drive effective strategies for promoting accountability, according to the release.

During the meeting, India's permanent representative to the UN, Ambassador Ruchira Kamboj, underscored the GOF's progress over the past year. She highlighted the insights gained into challenges related to accountability, especially in bolstering the rule of law within Mission areas. Kamboj expressed confidence in leveraging these insights to implement impactful measures that advance accountability for crimes against peacekeepers.
The meeting agenda included a substantial discussion on establishing legal frameworks to uphold accountability for crimes against peacekeepers. Professor Bimal Patel, a distinguished member of the International Law Commission and Vice Chancellor of Rashtriya Raksha University, provided expert insights on this complex topic. Member states actively engaged in fruitful deliberations on practical approaches to support host state rule-of-law institutions in prosecuting perpetrators and ensuring justice for peacekeepers.
The official release highlights that the High-Level Meeting of the GOF stands as evidence of the steadfast commitment of member states, led by India, to promote accountability and uphold the safety and dignity of Peacekeepers worldwide.
