The Union Cabinet approved the signing of a Letter of Intent on October 3, allowing India to join the International Energy Efficiency Hub, a global platform aimed at promoting collaboration and energy efficiency worldwide. The government stated that this decision reinforces India's commitment to sustainable development and aligns with its goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. By joining the hub, India will access a broad network of experts and resources, enhancing its domestic energy efficiency initiatives.
India’s membership in the Energy Efficiency Hub comes as the country aims to achieve net-zero emissions by 2070. Established in 2020 as the successor to the International Partnership for Energy Efficiency Cooperation (IPEEC), the hub unites governments, international organisations, and private sector entities to share knowledge, best practices, and innovative solutions.
As of July 2024, sixteen countries—including Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Denmark, the European Commission, France, Germany, Japan, Korea, Luxembourg, Russia, Saudi Arabia, the United States, and the United Kingdom—have joined the hub.
The government noted, “As a member of the hub, India will benefit from opportunities for collaboration with other member states, sharing its own expertise and learning from international best practices. The country will also contribute to global efforts to address climate change by promoting energy-efficient technologies and practices,” according to a press release.
The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) has been designated as the implementing agency for the hub on behalf of India. BEE will play a vital role in facilitating India’s participation in the hub's activities and ensuring that the country’s contributions align with its national energy efficiency goals.
India's involvement in this global platform is expected to accelerate the transition to a low-carbon economy and enhance energy security.
