In light of the evolving security situation in Libya, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) of India has issued a revised travel advisory for Indian nationals. This new directive partially modifies the MEA’s earlier complete travel ban to Libya, which was imposed on May 23, 2016, due to the unstable conditions in the region.
“In partial modification of MEA’s press release dated May 23, 2016, imposing a ban on Indian nationals travelling to Libya, and in response to our assessment of the prevailing security situation in Libya, Indian nationals are advised to avoid non-essential travel to Libya,” the release said.
The updated advisory strongly discourages Indian citizens from undertaking non-essential travel to Libya. For those already present in the country, it highlights the necessity of exercising caution, particularly regarding inter-province road travel, which poses significant risks. Indian nationals are advised to stay in close contact with the Indian Embassy in Tripoli and to utilise the emergency phone number for assistance and updates on the situation.
The Indian High Commission in the United Kingdom has issued a travel advisory for visitors from India, urging them to remain vigilant and exercise caution while travelling within the UK. The advisory recommends that travellers stay updated by following local news and directives issued by local security agencies. Additionally, it advises avoiding areas where protests are taking place to ensure safety.
The ongoing conflicts and security challenges in Libya, along with other international concerns, highlight the critical need for travellers to stay informed and exercise caution. Indian nationals are reminded to register with the nearest Indian embassy or consulate and stay updated with the latest advisories from the MEA.
