India recently held discussions with Iran on the safety of shipping routes and energy security as tensions continue to escalate in West Asia. The conversation took place between India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Iran’s Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi. Confirming the talks, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said that the two leaders have been in contact several times in recent days to discuss developments related to the conflict in the region.
According to the MEA, the most recent discussion between the two foreign ministers focused mainly on the safety of maritime routes and India’s energy needs. MEA spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, said the two leaders had spoken three times in the past few days. In their latest interaction, they reviewed issues related to the security of shipping routes and the possible impact on India’s energy supplies. However, he indicated that it would be too early to share additional details about the discussions or any specific outcomes.
The latest call between Jaishankar and Araghchi took place on March 10 as concerns have been rising about the wider effects of the ongoing crisis in West Asia. One of the main concerns for India is the possible disruption to energy supplies coming from the region. India relies heavily on oil imports from the Middle East, and any instability in the region could affect its energy security.
Following the conversation, Jaishankar shared an update on social media saying that he had a detailed discussion with his Iranian counterpart on the ongoing conflict. He also mentioned that both sides agreed to stay in touch and continue communication as the situation evolves.
During the discussion, India conveyed its serious concern over the developments taking place in Iran and the broader region. The government is closely monitoring the situation because of its potential impact on regional stability and international trade routes.
Since the conflict began in West Asia, India has been actively engaging with leaders from the Gulf region. PM Modi has held conversations with several leaders from Gulf countries to discuss the situation. During these interactions, he emphasised the importance of resolving tensions through dialogue and diplomatic efforts so that peace can be restored at the earliest.
The Indian government has also highlighted the importance of protecting civilians during the conflict. Officials stated that India has stressed the need to prevent civilian casualties and ensure that innocent people are not affected by the fighting.
India also raised concerns about the safety and welfare of its citizens living in the Gulf region. A large number of Indians live and work in the countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). India is closely monitoring the security situation to ensure that the interests of its citizens are protected. India has also expressed concern about actions that violate the sovereignty and territorial integrity of nations.
There have also been reports suggesting that Indian vessels were allowed to pass through the Strait of Hormuz. When asked about this development, Jaiswal said he could not confirm the reports at this stage. He added that the shipping ministry may have more information regarding the movement of vessels in the region.
Meanwhile, the Indian government is also taking steps to ensure the safety of its citizens in Tehran. Authorities are coordinating closely with the Indian Embassy in Iran to assist Indian nationals living in the country and help them relocate to safer areas if necessary.
According to the MEA, around 9,000 Indian citizens are currently living in Iran. This group includes students, seafarers, professionals, businesspeople, and pilgrims. Officials said that many Indian students have already returned home in recent days.
The government has also moved several Indian nationals from Tehran to safer locations within the country. For those who wish to leave Iran, India is helping arrange travel through neighbouring countries such as Azerbaijan and Armenia. With assistance from Indian authorities, these individuals are being provided with visas and support to cross land borders so they can take commercial flights back to India.
Officials added that the Indian mission in Tehran is maintaining constant communication with the Indian community there. The embassy is providing all possible assistance and guidance to ensure their safety during this period of uncertainty.
