In a significant testament to the robust collaborative relations, the Indian Navy Dornier aircraft was formally transferred to the Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) during a ceremony at SLAF Base Katunayake. Indian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, Gopal Baglay, conducted the ceremonial handover of the aircraft to Sagala Ratnayaka, the Chief of Staff and Senior Adviser to the President on National Security of Sri Lanka. This event, attended by senior officials from both the Sri Lanka Air Force and the Indian Defense Adviser, underscored the intrinsic significance of this collaborative milestone.
A significant stride in the collaborative efforts between the two nations was highlighted with the handover of an Indian-made Dornier aircraft. This noteworthy development constitutes the second Dornier aircraft to be leased to the Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF), facilitated by a grant from the Government of India. The new addition takes the place of the previous Indian Navy Dornier, which had been in service for a year before its scheduled maintenance and return to India, exactly a year ago on August 15, 2022, following its ceremonial handover to President Ranil Wickremesinghe.
The incorporation of the advanced Indian Navy Dornier Maritime Reconnaissance aircraft significantly enhances Sri Lanka's surveillance capabilities. This augmentation, integrated into the SLAF's existing fleet, is poised to act as a potent force multiplier, substantially bolstering national security efforts. During the ceremony, Indian High Commissioner Baglay reiterated India's steadfast commitment to enhancing Sri Lanka's defense capabilities, aligning with the "Security and Growth for All in the Region" (SAGAR) initiative.
The aircraft's proven operational prowess was evident in its prior deployment, showcasing effectiveness in maritime reconnaissance and search and rescue missions. This experience streamlined operational protocols between the Indian Navy and the Sri Lanka Air Force.
In a gesture of gratitude, Ratnayaka expressed appreciation for India's unwavering support, particularly during challenging periods. He highlighted the enduring relationship between the two countries, emphasizing India's assistance not only with the aircraft but also in broader realms. Ratnayaka stated, "Our friends, our neighboring friends, were gracious enough to assist us. It is not only with this aircraft that we have received India’s assistance. It’s been a longstanding relationship, but in more recent times, when we were going through an economic crisis, India stepped up beyond the call of duty to lend us a hand."
The operational readiness and capabilities of the Dornier aircraft hold a pivotal role in addressing mutual security challenges within the region. These challenges encompass critical issues such as drug and human trafficking, smuggling, and search and rescue missions. The Dornier, equipped with advanced sensor technology, empowers the Sri Lanka Air Force to effectively safeguard its Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) against maritime threats.
