Bangladesh's interim administration, led by Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus, has withdrawn former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's passport. On Tuesday, the interim government in Dhaka made the decision.
The passports of 97 people, including the former prime minister, have been withdrawn due to the criminal proceedings in opposition to them in the country.
Whereas 22 of these people are charged with suspected connection to enforced disappearances, 75 individuals are accused of connection in mass killings following last year's protests by students in Bangladesh. The move comes barely one day shortly after the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) filed arrest warrants for Sheikh Hasina and 11 others in connection with enforced disappearances and extrajudicial executions that occurred during her time as prime minister.
The tribunal announced a deadline of February 12 for the accused, which includes Hasina, to get arrested and brought beforehand.
On Monday, January 6, the order was made after a hearing. The other suspects are Major General (retd) Tariq Ahmed Siddique, who is the defence advisor of Hasina; the former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed; and also the former Director General of the National Telecommunication Monitoring Centre (NTMC) Ziaul Ahsan.
Around the same time, India has extended the visa of former Bangladesh Prime Minister Hasina. The move involving the Union home ministry, was done through the local Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO), the people in the know said without providing details.
During the student protest, 230 people were killed in Bangladesh in deadly clashes that broke out everywhere in the country next to the collapse of the Hasina government, bringing the overall death toll above 600 since the widespread student protest towards a controversial quota system in government jobs began in mid-July.
On August 5, last year 2024, the Bangladeshi Awami League leader fled the nation to seek safety in India.
