India has been elected to the 15-member steering committee of the GlobE Network, a global anti-corruption platform, following multi-stage voting in Beijing on September 26, officials announced. The GlobE Network comprises 121 member countries and 219 member authorities, with the steering committee consisting of one chair, one vice-chair, and thirteen additional members to provide leadership.
India was elected to the steering committee after a multi-stage voting process at the ongoing fifth plenary meeting of the Global Operational Network of Anti-Corruption Law Enforcement Authorities (GlobE Network) in Beijing, officials reported.
"A CBI spokesperson stated that as a member of the steering committee, India will be instrumental in shaping the global agenda on corruption and asset recovery. The country’s expertise and experience in combating corruption will be significant assets to the GlobE Network."
The Union Home Ministry serves as the central authority for India within the GlobE Network, while the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) act as member authorities. Established as a G20 initiative, the GlobE Network aims to combat cross-border financial crimes and corruption, and India has been a strong supporter of this initiative since 2020.
The platform was officially launched in June 2021 at a special event during the UN General Assembly Special Session against Corruption (UNGASS). According to the CBI statement, it has become a distinctive platform where agencies from around the world can share best practices, exchange criminal intelligence, develop strategies, and collaborate in the collective effort to combat corruption.
"The GlobE Network is a crucial platform for international cooperation, and India’s involvement will enhance its initiatives to combat cross-border financial crimes and corruption," it stated. During India's G20 presidency, two high-level principles for combating corruption were adopted, emphasising the importance of leveraging the GlobE Network, it added.
