India has increased its financial grant to Rs 172.25 million to support the education of the Indian-origin Tamil community in Sri Lanka’s plantation areas. On Friday, Indian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, Santosh Jha, and Secretary of Sri Lanka's Ministry of Education and Science and Technology, J M Thilaka Jayasundara, signed and exchanged diplomatic letters to formalise the agreement.
"The project envisages the upgradation of infrastructure of nine plantation schools identified by the Government of Sri Lanka. These include six schools in the plantation areas of Central Province and one school each in Uva, Sabaragamuwa, and Southern Province," Jha said.
India’s total commitment to this educational project now stands at 600 million Sri Lankan rupees (INR 172.25 million), following the request for additional funding from Sri Lanka. This project adds to India's numerous development partnership initiatives in the important education sector in Sri Lanka.
The grant will be used for infrastructure development and the supply of essential equipment to the selected schools. Additionally, India’s collaboration with Sri Lanka includes a focus on training and capacity-building for educators, ensuring long-term improvements in educational outcomes.
By enhancing educational facilities, the initiative seeks to improve access to quality education in the plantation areas where the Indian-origin Tamil community resides. Many schools in these regions lack basic facilities, and this project aims to address these gaps.
India’s increased financial support highlights the strong bilateral ties between the two nations and demonstrates its ongoing commitment to uplifting the education sector in Sri Lanka. This assistance reinforces India’s dedication to helping the Indian-origin Tamil community achieve better educational opportunities and socio-economic development.
