On Friday, India and Denmark reaffirmed their allegiance to clean energy by inking a revived Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). This updated agreement aims to promote further green energy efforts and back India’s goal of reaching net-zero emissions by 2070. The MoU was signed by Pankaj Agarwal, Secretary of the Ministry of Power, and Denmark’s Ambassador to India, Rasmus Abildgaard Kristensen, in the presence of Power and Housing Minister Manohar Lal. This agreement builds on the initial MoU signed on June 5, 2020, which was initially set to remain in effect until June 2025.
The updated MoU broadens the partnership to include advanced areas like power system modelling, managing renewable energy integration, cross-border electricity trade, and building infrastructure for electric vehicle charging. It also highlights the importance of sharing expertise through joint training sessions, expert exchanges, and study visits. While speaking at the event, Manohar Lal emphasised the joint commitment of both countries to sustainable progress, saying, “This renewed energy cooperation reflects our shared commitment to fostering a cleaner and greener future.”
After five years of successful partnership, the agreement guarantees continued communication and technology sharing, reinforcing India and Denmark's roles as essential allies in the worldwide shift toward clean energy.
India and Denmark have been working together on energy matters since 2018. India’s electricity demand is expected to double by 2030, as the third-largest energy consumer globally. With much of its power still coming from fossil fuels, India also ranks as the third-biggest emitter of carbon dioxide.
Despite this, India has set ambitious renewable energy goals, aiming for half of its electricity generation capacity to come from non-fossil sources by 2030.
Drawing from its long-standing experience integrating renewables while maintaining a highly reliable power supply, Denmark shares its expertise directly with India. The goal is to help speed up the country’s clean energy shift as its economy grows.
