The Indian and Chinese armies held corps commander-level talks on Sunday at the Wacha-Damai border meeting point in Arunachal Pradesh’s Kibithoo sector. The meeting focused on border issues along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in the eastern sector. It came days after India and China held their 25th round of talks between their special representatives in Beijing.

Officials familiar with the matter said the military discussions focused on maintaining peace and tranquillity along the LAC. The talks also covered measures to manage the border and prevent tensions from escalating between the two sides.

Lieutenant General Girish Kalia, who heads the Dimapur-based 3 Corps, led the Indian delegation at the meeting. The Indian Army has not issued any official statement on the talks.

The meeting marked the first corps commander-level engagement in the eastern sector since the latest round of talks between the special representatives. During their meeting in Beijing, the two sides agreed on eight points of outcome and consensus. These included adding two more locations for holding the Senior Highest Military Commander meeting, or SHMC, at the corps commander level. The move aims to strengthen border management measures.

Sunday’s meeting also came after reported tensions between Indian Army and Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) troops in Taksin, a remote area of Arunachal Pradesh’s Upper Subansiri district. The latest engagement is the first corps commander-level meeting since those reported developments.

The situation in the Taksin area remains unclear. People familiar with the matter had earlier said Indian and Chinese troops had several face-offs in the area. The situation reportedly became more serious towards the end of July. No further details about the status of the reported standoff have been made public.

India has continued to stress the need to maintain peace along the border as part of efforts to improve bilateral relations with China. On August 25, National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met in Beijing as the special representatives of the two countries. Their discussions focused on boundary delimitation and transboundary cooperation.

According to a readout from the external affairs ministry, the Indian side “highlighted the importance of maintaining peace and tranquillity in the India-China border areas for the continued development and progress of the bilateral relationship.”

The latest military meeting comes as India and China work to stabilise ties after the military confrontation in eastern Ladakh in 2020. The confrontation led to a prolonged standoff and caused relations between the two countries to fall to their lowest level since the 1962 border war.

The August meeting in Beijing was the third round of talks between the special representatives since India and China reached an understanding in October 2024 to end the Ladakh standoff. The two sides have since taken steps to restore communication and improve stability along the border.

The renewed military engagement in Arunachal Pradesh indicates continued efforts by both countries to strengthen communication between their forces. Regular meetings at the senior military level are also aimed at addressing border issues and maintaining peace along the LAC. However, the reported tensions in the Taksin area show that challenges remain along the disputed frontier.

The Wacha-Damai meeting is therefore significant as India and China continue their broader efforts to manage their border differences. The focus remains on preventing fresh confrontations while keeping diplomatic and military channels open.
