India has blocked access to the official X (formerly Twitter) account of the Pakistani government following the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which claimed 26 lives. This action was taken a day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) to decide how India would respond to the April 23 attack. In response to the attack, India took steps such as suspending a crucial water-sharing agreement under the Indus Waters Treaty and closing the main land border crossing in Kashmir. On Tuesday afternoon, around 2:30 pm, gunmen opened fire on a group of tourists enjoying pony rides in the valley, leading to one of the deadliest assaults in the area since the revocation of Article 370 in 2019.
On Wednesday, the Ministry of External Affairs announced that "The Defence/Military, Naval and Air Advisors in the Pakistani High Commission in New Delhi are declared Persona Non Grata. They have a week to leave India. India will be withdrawing its own Defence/Navy/Air Advisors from the Indian High Commission in Islamabad. These posts in the respective High Commissions are deemed annulled. Five support staff of the Service Advisors will also be withdrawn from both High Commissions."
Despite the Pakistani government’s official X account being blocked in India, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Deputy PM and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, and other ministers remained accessible. While leaders worldwide condemned the attack on social media, Prime Minister Sharif and his ministers did not share similar messages, except for a statement released by Pakistan’s Foreign Office. On Wednesday, Pakistan described the terror attack in Pahalgam as part of a series of “revolutions” against the oppression of minority communities by Hindutva forces in India.
Pakistan’s defence minister, Khwaja Asif, stated, “This is all home-grown; there are revolutions in different so-called states against India, not one, not two, but dozens, from Nagaland to Kashmir, in the south, in Chhattisgarh, in Manipur. In all these places, there are revolutions against the Indian government.” He added, “The people are asking for their rights (in India). Hindutva forces are exploiting the people, repressing minorities and exploiting Christians and Buddhists. They are being killed, this is a revolution against that, it is because of this that such activities are happening there.”
On Thursday, Pakistan is holding a vital security meeting to decide how to respond to India’s decision to suspend the Indus Water Treaty. Prime Minister Sharif has called a National Security Committee meeting to discuss India’s “irresponsible actions,” following what Pakistan describes as the Pahalgam false flag operation. The meeting will include the chiefs of the three armed services and key government ministers, according to Radio Pakistan.
