In a major setback to the opposition unity ahead of the Delhi elections, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) announced that it would discuss with other parties in the INDIA bloc about removing the Congress from the coalition. The AAP is frustrated with the Congress after it filed a complaint against Arvind Kejriwal, accusing him of misleading the public with promises of welfare schemes that don't exist.
Ajay Maken's recent comments that the Congress's 2012 choice to back the AAP contributed to its downfall in Delhi have only served to exacerbate the situation. During a news conference, AAP Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh blasted Maken for reportedly referring to Kejriwal as "anti-national" and urged the Congress to move against him right away. Singh, with Chief Minister Atishi by his side, claimed that the Congress was "doing everything" to support the BJP in the Delhi elections. "Congress's Ajay Maken is reading BJP's script... AAP will ask INDIA bloc parties to remove Congress from the alliance if no action is taken against Ajay Maken," Singh said.
Atishi asserted that the BJP was paying for the election expenses of Congress candidates, including Sandeep Dixit. "Congress's action makes it clear that the party has made some arrangements with the BJP for the Delhi elections. The BJP is funding Congress candidates. We have heard that Sandeep Dikshit is getting funded by the BJP," she said. "If Congress thinks we (AAP) are anti-national, then why did they contest the Lok Sabha elections in alliance with us? It is clear that Congress leaders have reached some mutual understanding with the BJP to defeat AAP and make BJP win in Delhi," the Chief Minister added.
The Youth Congress filed a complaint against Kejriwal after two Delhi government departments issued public notices stating that the proposed Mahila Samman Yojana and Sanjeevani Yojana had not been officially approved or implemented, and therefore do not exist. The development comes as Delhi Congress leaders have intensified their criticism of the ruling party in the city. Kejriwal has earlier declared that the AAP will contest the Delhi elections independently, aiming for a fourth term. On Wednesday, Maken escalated the issue by stating that Congress needs to correct its "mistake" of joining hands with AAP for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
Virendra Sachdeva, the leader of the Delhi BJP, responded to the AAP vs. Congress contest by claiming that both parties "looted" Delhi and were manipulating the situation to improve their standing before the polls. "15 years ago, Congress looted Delhi and now, for the past 12 years, AAP is looting the national capital... Now, that they have realised that they are losing in the Assembly elections, they are doing every possible thing to turn their fate around... Where was their conscience when, during Lok Sabha, they used to roam around together? BJP has been fighting them both for years," Sachdeva said.
