India, Austria express collective support for 'peaceful resolution' to Ukraine conflict

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Austria on the evening of July 9th following a significant visit to Russia. This marks the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Austria in more than four decades, with the last visit by an Indian Prime Minister being by Indira Gandhi in 1983.
Upon arriving in Vienna, the Indian Prime Minister was welcomed by Austrian Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg. Indian Ambassador to Austria, Shambhu Kumaran, was also present at the airport during the reception.
During his time in Vienna, PM Modi is scheduled to meet with Austrian President Alexander Van der Bellen and engage in discussions with Chancellor Nehammer. Both leaders are expected to address business representatives from India and Austria. Officials indicated that the two nations will explore opportunities to strengthen their bilateral ties and enhance collaboration on various geopolitical issues.

During a joint press conference with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Vienna, Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer praised the longstanding and trustworthy relationship between Austria and India, dating back to the 1950s. Chancellor Nehammer also underscored the positive history of cooperation between India and Austria, noting India's assistance to Austria and the successful conclusion of negotiations leading to the Austrian State Treaty in 1955. This treaty marked a significant milestone in their bilateral relations, reflecting mutual respect and collaboration over the years.
Chancellor Nehammer highlighted shared concerns over global geopolitical developments, emphasising that discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi included the ongoing conflict involving Russia and Ukraine. He underscored the importance of understanding India's perspective while also familiarising India with European perspectives and concerns.
In addition to addressing challenging geopolitical issues like the Middle East conflict, Nehammer emphasised the positive aspects of cooperation between India and Austria that were also discussed during their meetings.
PM Modi emphasised a commitment to peace, stating that war is not a solution to problems and that the killing of innocent people is unacceptable anywhere. He highlighted India and Austria's shared emphasis on dialogue and diplomacy, expressing readiness to support each other as needed.
Modi expressed satisfaction with his historic visit to Austria early in his third term as Prime Minister, marking the first visit by an Indian PM in 41 years. He described the discussions with Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer as meaningful, focusing on exploring new avenues to strengthen bilateral relations. They agreed to give strategic direction to these ties, particularly in sectors such as infrastructure development, renewable energy, hydrogen, water and waste management, and artificial intelligence. Modi underscored the mutual goal of leveraging each other's strengths and capabilities through collaborative efforts.
