India and the US recently engaged in discussions regarding the co-production of American Javelin missiles in India to meet the Indian military's operational needs. Defence sources informed ANI that these discussions on joint missile production occurred during a recent high-level visit from the US to India.
India and the US have been in discussions to broaden their cooperation, which includes exploring joint production of military equipment. Sources indicated that the Army's demand for the latest anti-tank guided missiles is substantial, prompting it to procure a limited quantity of Israeli Spike ATGMs through emergency channels to address immediate needs.
The need for third-generation ATGMs has persisted for an extended period, with global procurement attempts proving unsuccessful, according to defence officials.
Efforts to acquire these missile systems domestically are ongoing, with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) preparing to conduct trials of its Man-Portable Anti Tank Guided Missile (MPATGM) soon to meet the Army's requirements.
The Indian MPATGM Weapon System has undergone multiple field evaluations in various flight configurations to demonstrate its technological superiority. It comprises the MPATGM, Launcher, Target Acquisition System, and Fire Control Unit.
Sources within the military indicate that Indian forces are seeking shoulder-fired missile systems that are lightweight and can be easily transported by troops in challenging terrain without requiring excessive manpower.
Sources indicated that the Indian partner for the joint production of the missile system will be determined in subsequent stages, given that discussions are at an initial phase. Previously, the American side had demonstrated the capabilities of the Javelin missiles to India; however, the project did not progress further.
The Javelin missile system is a collaborative effort between American defence giants Raytheon and Lockheed Martin. These missiles have been supplied to several allied nations by the US and have been deployed in various conflicts, both historical and ongoing.
