These high-level discussions mark a significant moment as India and the Philippines celebrate 75 years of diplomatic relations, highlighting the deepening of their bilateral ties. Over this period, the relationship has evolved into a broad-based partnership, with collaboration spanning numerous sectors. India’s “Act East” policy has been instrumental in this evolving partnership, enhancing connectivity, security, and fostering economic and cultural linkages with Southeast Asian nations, including the Philippines. This policy was central to the recent dialogues, reflecting its pivotal role in strengthening ties between the two countries.
According to a statement from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on September 10, 2024, the 14th India-Philippines Policy Consultation Talks and the 5th Strategic Dialogue resulted in an agreement to enhance cooperation in several critical areas. These include defence and security, trade and investment, healthcare, education, energy, agriculture, digital and financial technology, space, connectivity, culture, and people-to-people exchanges.
The Indian delegation was led by Jaideep Mazumdar, Secretary (East) from the Ministry of External Affairs, while the Philippines delegation was headed by Ma. Theresa P. Lazaro, Undersecretary for Bilateral Relations and ASEAN Affairs. The discussions at the meeting on September 9, 2024, highlighted the shared interests of both countries in advancing regional stability, fostering mutual economic growth, and tackling global challenges such as climate change and maritime security.
